Patna: Residents of the State Capital felt excessive heat through out the day because of the hot and humid weather. But for the kids of Tender Heart International School, this was a day for enjoyment and fun in the swimming pool of the school.

The school has organised a summer swimming camp for the children studying in lower classes.

Encroachments on Badshahi canal will be removed soon

Patna: District administration will remove encroachments from 45 places on the Badshahi canal, which was once one of the bests drain of the state capital to drain out excess rain water in the monsoon season.

In a review meeting with Patna Divisional Commissioner Anand Kishor on chair, it was decided to give a new leash of life to Badshahi canal by removing encroachments and illegal construction on both the sides of the canal.

Kishor had identified 22 places of encroachments in Phulwari block in which interim orders have been passed in 17 cases.

The hearing of 5 cases will be held on May 9.

In Sampatchak block, 12 places of encroachments have been identified while in Patna Sadar, 11 places of encroachments have been detected.

The hearing of all these cases will be held on May 11.

Kishor said the encroachments would be removed on priority basis.

Big theft committed in a Ashok Nagar Colony house

Patna: Burglars struck in the house of Phani Mohan, an employee of education department, located at Road No 7 Ashok Nagar under Kankarbagh police station on Tuesday/ Wednesday night and escaped with cash and valuables worth Rs 2 lakh.

At the time of the incident, four members of the family were sleeping in the same room where the act was committed. House owner Phani Mohan believed that the thieves entered the house through the ventilator of bathroom.

Police are probing into the matter.

105 candidates file nominations for PMC elections

Patna: As many as 272 candidates filed their nominations for Patna Nagar Nigam, Nagar Prishad and Nagar Panchayat elections on Wednesday in the district. Among them 155 were women and rest 117 were men.

In Patna Municipal Corporation, 105 candidates filed their nominations from different wards on Wednesday and among them 61 were women.

The nominations will continue till May 9.

In Patna district there are 9 urban bodies. They are Patna Nagar Nigam, Nagar Parishad Phulwari, Nagar Parishad Danapur, Nagar Parishad Khagaul, Nagar Parishad Barh, Nagar Parishad Mokama, Nagar Parishad Mashaurih, Nagar Parishad Bakhtiyarpur and Nagar Panchayat Maner.

Poisonous gas in manhole kills two sweepers

Patna: Two sweepers of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) died and two other fainted inhaling poisonous gas when they were doing cleaning of an underground drain near Income Tax round about here on Wednesday.

A six-member sweepers' team comprising Deepu Choudhary, Jitendra Paswan, Mahendra and others reached the manhole point to clean the underground drain in the morning. Deepu entered into the manhole pulling the lid up. Getting no response from Deepu after a few minutes, his colleague Jitendra too entered into the manhole.

Other sweepers too started shouting Jitendra's name as it is a rule they follow during the cleaning of underground drain through manhole. Getting no answer from Jitendra, another sweeper Mahendra entered into the manhole tying a rope around his waist but he too fainted. Other coworkers quickly pulled him out.

Later a fireman with oxygen cylinder in his back tried to enter the manhole but he too fainted.

Police swung into action and recovered Deepu and Jitendra from the manhole. They were sent to nearby Gardiner Hospital for treatment. After some primary aid they were taken to Paras Hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

It's learnt that there was a gross negligence on the part of the PMC as the workers were asked to enter the manhole within one hour after opening its lid while the norms say the duration should be a minimum of six hours for proper emission of deadly gases. The sweepers also did not have the equipment required for this type of cleaning operation.

The workers union of the PMC staged strong demonstration at the New Capital Region office of the PMC with bodies of the victims. They demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation each for the family members of the victims.

The union has also threatened to go on strike from May 15 if their demands are not met.

Nalanda Open University to go for digitization

Patna: Nalanda Open University will go for digitization to make its functioning better in the interest of the students. The newly appointed vice chancellor Dr Ravnidra Kumar Sinha said the quality education would be the main focus of the university.

Talking to scribes here on Wednesday, Dr Sinha said the university was seriously considering to do all the working online, right from students registration to examination system, so that students could get every necessary things in their home and there would be no need for them coming here.

"The university is also planning to provide study materials online and start an e-library for the students", he said.

He said the existing library would be upgraded and university would introduce job oriented skill development course soon.

He said the university had been struggling with space crisis and manpower requirement. "We are going to write state government to provide us a bigger space and required manpower to run the institution smoothly", he said.

Sinha said the university had a plan to open 240 centres across the state but some centres were yet to be launched. "The remaining centres would be opened soon and numbers of course coordinator will be increased", he added.

University registrar Dr SP Singh said new session of the university would begin from July 1 while the last date of registration is August 30.
