Bihar Assembly passes GST Bill

Patna: Both the Houses of the Bihar Legislatures passed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill 2017 on voice votes in a special session on Monday.

All the parties including Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress of ruling Grand Alliance and Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported the passage of the Bill that paves away for July 1 roll out of the GST nation-wide.

The GST is a single tax system which will replace multiple State and Central Taxes to create one national market in most of the goods and services.

Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Dr Prem Kumar congratulated Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the smooth passage of the Bill in Bihar Assembly.

The special session of the House also passed four others Bills that included Bihar State Universities Amendment Act and Patna University Amendment Act.

Under the Bihar State Universities Amendment Act, the principal of the colleges will be put under the category of teaching employees. This will give three years benefit to principals in the retirement age. Earlier, principals are to retire at the age of 62 due to his non-teaching employee's status.

Under the new amendment, now a retired Bihar Administrative Services officer can be appointed as registrar of a university.

Fire in flats destroys property worth lakhs

Patna: Property worth lakhs of rupees were gutted following a devastating fire that broke into two flats of Nutan Tower Apartment near Colony Mor under Kankarbagh police station here on Monday,

The cause of the fire in the flat numbers 303 and 304 belonging to one Sushma Kumari, director, Technoculture Building Centre, was yet to be ascertained. At the time of the incident one helper was in the flat while the owner was out of the city.

The helper, who was sleeping in a room of the flat, felt suffocated in the Sunday/Monday night due to smoke which engulfed the room badly. She woke up and called the neighbors.

On being informed, five fire tenders rushed to the spot and tamed the blazing flames. Police said actual loss of the property could only be quantified after the return of the owner.

Police, however, could not rule out the possibility of short circuit as cause of the fire.

No reason to dismantle Farakka barrage, says Uma Bharti

Patna: Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti ruled out the possibility of dismantling Farakka Barrage to solve the persistent problem of silts in Ganga.

"Silting is a problem in all rivers. We have got the reports on the causes of silting in Ganga and the work will start soon to make Ganga silt free," he said.

"We can solve the problem of silting in the other rivers too by following Ganga a model in near future", he said.

"The Union Government is serious on the issue of Ganga river silting", he said.

Bharti inspected the progress of Ganga River Front Development Project and made a trip from Barharwa Ghat to Gandhi Ghat, during her one-day visit of the state capital.

Earlier, the union minister reviewed the progress work of Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) and Sewerage Network Project of the State Capital at State Guest House.

Six STPs and 1163 km-long sewerage line are set to be constructed in Patna.

Construction work of three STPs-Saidpur, Beur and Karmalichak-projects have already been approved under Centre and State partnership while the Central Government will bear all the expenses of Kankarbagh and Digha STPs.
